Dubstep is a musical genre that emerged in the late 90s and early 2000s in London, England. It is the culmination of a lineage of genres such as the 2-step garage, broken beat, drum and bass, jungle, dub and reggae
The first samples of dubstep were published on July 4, 2001. They were instrumental, dark and experimental remixes of 2-step garage productions, made with the intention of incorporating the funky elements of the breakbeat or the darker features of the drum and bass in the own 2-step. These remixes appeared as B-side of the 2-step singles of the time. In 2001, this and other varieties of dark garage music began to be shown at the London nightclub Plastic People, at nights called "Forward" (also stylized as FWD >>), which would be considerably influential for the development of dubstep. The term "dubstep" as the denomination of a musical genre began to be used around 2002 by record labels such as Big Apple, Ammunition and Tempa, at which time the stylistic tendencies present in the remixes began to become more remarkable and distinctive in relation to the original genre, the 2-step, as well as the grime, sound with which in its origins the dubstep also kept a close relationship
