Countdown to Murder - "Stalked to Death" ---

This week's episode examines the circumstances surrounding one of Britain's most frenzied and brutal knife attacks. Ambulance technician Jonathan Vass stabbed his ex-partner Jane Clough over 70 times in the car park of the Blackpool hospital where she worked.
He was a jack-the-lad and keen bodybuilder who took steroids, but he had lured Jane into a relationship with his apparent caring side. He told her that his marriage was over and that he was about to get divorced from his wife, with whom he had two young children. In fact, Vass was still very much married.
In January 2009, when Clough fell pregnant, Vass began to be violent and abusive towards her. She later told police that when she was seven months pregnant, he raped her after she refused to have sex with him. She left him but then returned after he promised to change.
The couple's daughter was born in October 2009, but the sexual and physical assaults continued. In the end, Clough decided to leave Vass for good and went to the police to report the attacks. She told police that six weeks after the birth he had raped her again, and that on one occasion he had raped her while her baby daughter was in the room. As a result, Vass was charged with nine counts of rape. He was put on remand and suspended from his job. But the following month, a judge granted Vass bail.
On July 25th, Clough was walking from her car to start her shift at the hospital. Vass was lying in wait for her and stabbed her 71 times. The attack was so frenzied that when she was rushed into A&E, her workmates did not at first recognise her as they fought a desperate and ultimately hopeless battle to save her life.
