00:05 We're going to celebrate the winners of this 78th edition with a procession into Madrid

00:09 and no doubt a final bunch sprint before the 148 finishers enjoy a bit of well-earned rest.

00:18 After 20 days you're happy to be here, finalised at the 21st stage.

00:25 Sepp Kuss will win his first Grand Tour after a remarkable season which saw him ride the

00:29 Giro, the Tour and La Vuelta.

00:31 The ultimate reward for the ultimate domestique.

00:34 Yeah, usually I'm on the other side of, I'm often on the winning teams but to be the one

00:44 wearing the leaders jersey is just incredible.

00:47 So yeah, still living a dream.

00:50 Caden Groves has missed out on victory in the last three bunch sprints and he hasn't

00:54 entirely wrapped up the points classification.

00:56 The Aussie's hoping to get it right today but he knows this isn't your average stage.

01:00 A lot of people have a different feeling on the final stage of racing.

01:06 Some people get through the mountains better or, you know, yeah, it can be a number of

01:10 different factors but hopefully we have a good sprint today and hopefully it's myself.

01:17 He's not the only man eyeing up victory though and we could well be in for a surprise.

01:22 I suffered a lot for to be here today so it's a good opportunity to do better than the four

01:30 places two days ago so I will try to win.

01:34 It's always a bit spectacular, the Grand Tour finishes.

01:38 There's always a masterful side to it, like on the Champs-Élysées for the Tour de France.

01:43 So it's an honour to be able to finish this Vuelta, to arrive on Madrid.

01:49 We can't forget that today is also an opportunity for a sprint.

01:53 So we'll try, with Driss again, to get in the best shape possible for that.

02:01 The season is slowly but surely drawing to a close and for some riders there are question

02:05 marks about what comes next.

02:08 How many more Grand Tours do you want to do after this one?

02:15 Once I go away and just have a bit of a rest and get away from the cycling world for a

02:21 bit, then I can come back and think about that and decide.

02:29 Stage 21 is a spin of just over 100km around the Spanish capital.

02:33 The riders will cross the finish line for the first time with around 50km to go and

02:37 do nine laps of a high speed circuit.

02:40 The intermediate sprint will be important for the green jersey and it'll then be time

02:44 to get set for the final sprint shootout of this race.

02:59 The leaders of the different classifications gathering just after the start.

03:03 Job done for Evaner Paul, Kuss and Ayuso but Groves still had some work to do.

03:12 It was a day of celebration for Jumbo-Visma who've had a dream season winning all three

03:16 Grand Tours.

03:18 The Dutch squad were even wearing a special kit bearing the colours of the jerseys they

03:21 conquered - pink, yellow and red.

03:24 It's an unprecedented achievement in men's cycling and they did it with three different

03:28 riders.

03:38 Kuss becomes the fourth American to win a Grand Tour after Greg LeMond, Andrew Hampsten

03:43 and Chris Horner, the only previous man from the US to triumph at La Vuelta.

03:52 After sweeping Plaza de Colón in the heart of Madrid, it was time for the riders to get

03:56 their game faces on.

03:57 There were 20 points up for grabs on the second passage of the line and Groves didn't need

04:02 asking twice.

04:06 Coming through it was Alpecin de Koenink who took full control.

04:09 Caden Groves comes through the final ŠKODA Intermediate sprint of this year's Vuelta.

04:14 He takes the maximum points, 20 points to him.

04:19 Three men then went on the attack and not just any three men.

04:22 Stage winner Rui Costa, stage winner Leonard Kemner and his Bora-Hansgrohe team mate Nico

04:28 And they were quickly followed by you know who, Evanapol as well as Groves and Filippo

04:33 This definitely wasn't in the script.

04:39 A six man breakaway with an incredible amount of firepower and suddenly with six laps to

04:43 go the chase was on.

04:46 Plenty of teams were keen to drag them back but they were struggling to get themselves

04:49 organised, the gap holding at around 20 seconds.

04:54 All five of the six men at the front had won stages of this Vuelta.

04:58 They were looking for another one to see it out on a high note.

05:03 The breathless chase continued into the final lap with the gap down to just a handful of

05:07 seconds as they hurtled into the final kilometre.

05:10 Could they hang on or would the peloton make the catch?

05:24 Is this the end of the breakaway?

05:26 They almost had it in the bag and now Remco Evanapol opens up the sprint.

05:31 It's all back together with 500 metres remaining and now is Remco Evanapol who's trying to

05:37 go for a fourth stage victory.

05:39 Caden Groves is trying to rush the gap and here comes the green jersey.

05:43 Leonard Kemner is trying to accelerate and Caden Groves is having difficulty to try and

05:49 come around the King of the Mountains winner.

05:51 Groves is coming through.

05:53 He's looking for his third victory.

05:55 He's looking to become the first Australian winner of the green jersey.

05:59 The breakaway didn't make it but Groves from the breakaway takes the win.

06:16 Groves winning a very unusual sprint indeed as he and his breakaway companions lit up

06:20 this final stage.

06:22 He becomes the first Aussie to win the points classification at La Vuelta, going home with

06:26 three stage victories and this one will surely live long in the memory.

06:32 We come into today really wanting to take the stage and obviously keep the green jersey

06:36 but from a breakaway it was not my intentions.

06:41 We all looked at each other and then that meant the peloton could come back together

06:44 but I knew that in this sprint I can find a little extra and Remco leading out at 500

06:52 metres was a big advantage for me.

06:54 At 29 years of age Sepp Kuss becomes a Grand Tour stage winner and he remarked that today's

06:59 stage felt harder than Angliru.

07:02 It's a ninth career victory for a man whose only previous GC success came at the Tour

07:06 of Utah in 2018.

07:10 Are you a different cyclist, different person now that you have won La Vuelta?

07:15 No not at all.

07:17 I'll still be me and it's life changing for sure but I think I'll just look back on this

07:25 experience with a lot of fond memories and it's still sinking in and I think that's going

07:34 to take quite some time.

07:40 Groves taking the win ahead of Ganna like on stage five, his seventh of the season and

07:43 the sixteenth of his career.

07:45 Alpecin de Koenig won eight stages at the Grand Tours this year, more than any other

07:49 team.

07:52 Jumbo-Visma locking out the overall podium with Kuss, Vingegaard and Roglic followed

07:56 by the Spanish trio of Ayuso, Landa and Mass.

08:00 Utebrooks was eighth on his Grand Tour debut with Evenepoel in twelfth.

08:05 The fight for green went down to the final metres of the race with Groves a worthy winner

08:09 ahead of Evenepoel.

08:10 Both riders go home with three stage victories.

08:15 It wasn't exactly plan A but Evenepoel dominated the mountains classification, finishing also

08:20 as the race's most aggressive rider.

08:22 He's no doubt learned some useful lessons ahead of his Tour de France debut in 2024.

08:27 Ayuso finished as the best young rider by almost five minutes from Utebrooks.

08:31 Third last year, fourth this year, he was the best of the rest behind the Jumbo-Visma

08:35 triumvirates.

08:37 But La Vuelta and the season belonged to the killer bees.

08:40 After Primoz Roglic in 2019, 20 and 21, they conquered Spain again with Sepp Kuss.
