I love Half-Life! I still have my Half-Life Lambda Hat!:D

I had a choice between the shirt and hat, and thought - the hat will last longer!

00:00Hello everybody, so if you'll notice this whole video is 640x480.
00:29That's because this is the original Half-Life, and this is how people played it.
00:34And the only thing that I don't have right now is the ability to give you a bloom effect
00:40as if you're looking at a CRT screen.
00:45I bought the game when it first came out, literally the day I walked into Hastings
00:50and found out Half-Life had been released.
00:53And anybody who bought a copy would get a t-shirt and a hat.
00:59Or a hat.
01:00You got to choose.
01:02I chose a hat because t-shirts wear out so easily and a hat is basically forever.
01:06It was stitched nice, it looked nice.
01:09So I've still got my Half-Life orange lambda symbol black hat somewhere with all my hats
01:17nicely stored away and protected.
01:20Ever since I moved, I put everything in a box, still there.
01:26So I really wish I could give the experience of watching this revolutionary game as if
01:34you were watching a CRT screen, but I don't have that filter.
01:40Still, putting it in 640x480 ratio, that was the way it was designed.
01:50If you could transport yourself back 26 years and imagine that this is like, it wasn't the
02:00first game like this, but it was the first game like this to really do it well.
02:09And it was just completely mind-blowing.
02:12The next game that I would purchase that was equally mind-blowing would be Return to Castle
02:17Wolfenstein.
02:21But let's play this one first and let's have some fun.
02:47Oh, and unfortunately, the game as it was presented in 1998 is no more.
03:17They did break the game up and put the training room separate.
03:23But originally, you went through the training when you began the game.
03:28So there are some things that are slightly different than what it used to be, although
03:35I think that the changes are for the best, you know.
03:40But let's go ahead and play.
03:47Hello and welcome to the Black Mesa Hazard Course, where you will be trained in the use
04:06of a hazardous environment suit.
04:08I am your holographic assistant.
04:11Let's begin by stepping into your suit.
04:14You can see it suspended up ahead of you.
04:16If you see one of these buttons, press it, and I will appear to demonstrate certain moves.
04:39Moving around in your HEV suit can be slightly disorienting at first.
04:44Take a moment to familiarize yourself with basic movement, and soon it will fit you like
04:49a second skin.
04:51I will see you just around the corner.
05:11Oh, it loaded up my past save instead of continuing me with the training.
05:39I just wanted to see if I could die in the training room.
05:41Yes, you can.
05:43I seem to remember that you could, but I wanted to verify it.
06:09Hello and welcome to the Black Mesa Hazard Course, where you will be trained in the use
06:13of a hazardous environment suit.
06:15I am your holographic assistant.
06:18Let's begin by stepping into your suit.
06:20You can see it suspended up ahead of you.
06:23If you see one of these buttons, press it, and I will appear to demonstrate certain moves.
06:29I just need to point out how awesome it was to have characters who are moving their mouths
06:35in 3D, because this was at a time in early 3D where mouths did not have face rigging.
06:43So yeah, this was kind of cool.
07:03Moving around in your HEV suit can be slightly disorienting at first.
07:08Take a moment to familiarize yourself with basic movement, and soon it will fit you like
07:13a second skin.
07:14I will see you just around the corner.
07:29The first move we will practice in the Hazard Course is basic jumping.
07:44You will attempt to get over this set of pipes using only your run and jump commands.
07:49It helps to get a running start.
07:52Watch me, and then try it yourself.
07:55Good work.
07:57Those new suits can be tricky.
08:03You will now duck under the next set of obstacles.
08:24Please note that crouching will automatically shift your suit into stealth mode, minimizing
08:30movement noise.
09:30God, I'm even in the training thing and I didn't pay attention to her telling me to
10:11To get into these pipes, you will have to signal your suit to make a duck jump.
10:21You'll want to stand right at the mouth of the pipe, and continue to press forward.
10:26Then jump up, and while you're in mid-air, go into a crouch.
10:30It's tricky, but you'll find it comes in handy.
10:45And according to everyone who's a video game historian, Half-Life created the duck jump.
10:58Nice jump.
11:07Walk directly into the ladder, look up, and continue moving forward.
11:12If you want to come back down, just move backward.
11:36The next three jumps get harder each time, but they are quite impossible.
11:41Don't be surprised if you miss the last one a time or two.
11:45If you can make all three in a continuous run, you are doing well.
11:57Great work.
11:58Now there's one more style of jumping you need to learn.
12:01Long jumping requires its own charging module, seen here.
12:05To activate your long jump, you will have to duck and move forward, and then launch
12:10into a jump.
12:11Once you're up on the platform, press the button, and I will demonstrate the move.
12:48Oh, and I also want to make some other point for all the video game historians out there
13:10who get things wrong.
13:13There were programmers who worked at both Valve and Monolith during Half-Life and Blood
13:182, and Blood 2 even has a reference to Valve's Half-Life in one of the transitional scenes.
13:28Blood 2 is the only other game, in fact, I can't remember if it predates Half-Life or
13:33not, but they were both in development around, you know, at the same time at one point.
13:41Blood is the only other game at the time that had this type of fluidic movement and
13:46control over a unit.
13:49Obviously, due to horrible things that happened during production at Monolith, Half-Life is
13:56the one that took the gold prize, or the blue ribbon.
14:03Please start the lift by moving up to the button, looking at it, and pressing the Use
14:11key.
14:12Now that you're up here, there's only one way down.
14:22Find the target on the floor below, and do your best to hit it.
14:26If you take any damage from the pulse, we will administer medical care at the next station.
14:37You will find medkits like this one throughout the Black Mesa compound.
14:41To restore your health, walk up to a medkit and press your Use key.
14:46Your health will recover gradually, until you are at full health, or the kit is depleted.
14:51Once the light goes out, a medkit cannot be reused.
15:12To spin that bridge, walk up to the control wheel, and press the Use key.
15:34Sometimes you'll need to rely on more than just your suit to get through a tight place.
15:40Try jumping this gap on your own.
15:43What you really need to do is push that box down into the pit.
15:48Pushing is easy.
15:49Just move forward against the box, and you can push it into position.
16:01If you can't push the obstacle out of your way, you might try pulling it.
16:06To pull a box, move up to it and press your Use key.
16:10While holding down the Use key to keep a grip on the box, move slowly backward.
16:40Finally, if nothing else works, you can try breaking the objects in your path.
17:10Activate your suit flashlight for the next area.
17:32Great, remember your flashlight drains power, so switch it off when you don't need it.
18:02Welcome to the Black Mesa Target Range, where you will receive training in firing a weapon,
18:15reloading, and firing the attached grenade launcher.
18:18Please pick up your weapon and advance to the firing station.
18:43You'll have to hit every target in order to complete the course, but if you miss the first
18:47time, don't worry, it will come around again.
18:51Try to reload during pauses rather than waiting to run out of ammunition at a critical time.
18:57To fire your grenade launcher, use your alternate fire button.
19:01Certain targets will break open when hit with grenades.
19:31Your HEV suit monitors blood oxygen levels, warning you when you need to find an air supply.
19:57As you swim through this course, your oxygen levels will begin to drop.
20:01At the midpoint, you will be given an opportunity to surface for air.
20:22See the blood oxygen indicator on your suit's heads-up display returning to its previous level.
20:28You are free to swim on to the end of the course.
20:47There are so many games out there that dealt with water before Half-Life, and Blood 2,
20:57that were just atrocious.
21:01So this was really kind of amazing.
21:04Like, we got a great water system.
21:08Had 10 years of first-person shooters.
21:12And we finally got a great swimming system.
21:42If you pass through fire or steam, you will see a heat damage icon lighting up.
21:54Directional indicators at the center of your display show you where damage is coming from.
22:09For proximity to radiation, activate the gauger counter and radiation display.
22:14Biohazards are also indicated with a luminous icon.
22:23Please advance to the next area.
22:27You know, I could be wrong.
22:29I thought that, you know, my memory could be very wrong.
22:32Maybe training was always a separate menu option.
22:37I don't know, I'm too lazy to look up.
22:39If I'm wrong, just laugh at me and point at me and say,
22:42Hey, Kevin, you're wrong. Put it in the comments.
23:08Lead a security guard into the next room.
23:11He will let you back into the transit system.
23:14You must approach a guard and press your use key.
23:17He will follow you until you face him and press the use key again.
23:22Sure, I'll follow you.
23:41Sure, I'll follow you.
23:55Yes, I will follow you if you wish.
24:06I refuse to go another step.
24:09Press your use key to engage the train.
24:12Press your forward and backward keys to increase or decrease the speed of the train.
24:18Press your use key again to disengage from the train.
24:34Congratulations on completing the Black Mesa hazard course.
