BLACK PIMP'N JESUS - CAN'T PRETEND

PRESENTED BY JULIAN

The band consists of four members ; Evert Snyman (lead vocals/ rhytm guitar/ producer), Koos Van Der Wat ( lead guitar and backing vocals) , James Botes (bass) and Conley Van Der Westhuizen (drums)

First things first, what does the name Black Pimp'n Jesus mean?
Black - Race
Pimp' n - social status, gender and money
Jesus -- Religion

These are but a few of the many reasons why the majority of different cultures on planet earth do not see eye to eye. In other words... BPJ is a metaphor for peace and acceptance to all people regardless of race, gender, social status or religious beliefs.

Black Pimpin Jesus (BPJ) originated in 2007 as a side project from the minds of Evert Snyman, Paul Vermaak and Bianca Nobanda. Koos Van Der Wat joined in later the year recording lead Guitar on the first BPJ album - Witness the Birth of...
The band started playing the Johannesburg/Pretoria gig circuit late 2007 until early 2008.

In 2008 the band started recording "The Devils' Gospel". Which took almost 2 and a half years to make, because Paul Vermaak was in hospital and Bianca Nobanda was working. Evert then started recording songs by himself which would become the 2nd Pink Noise album. The recordings started circulating and caught the interest of Johan Auriacombe, who said he would be the live drummer if Koos Van Der Wat played guitar. After Paul Vermaak was out of hospital they decided to put together a live band for Pink Noise. Havoc vultures' guitarist Rudy Van Rensburg also joined the band. With 3 guitarists, a bassist and a drummer Pink Noise started playing live in September of 2009, and we're often double booked with BPJ. Pink Noise played various venues in Joburg and Pretoria and went on to play OPPIKOPPI.

After Oppikoppi BPJ continued working on the Devils' gospel. In this same year many songs we're recorded by Evert, Koos and Paul which would finally become "The AFTERBIRTH" album, which is comprised of more experimental tracks, b-sides, demos and 1 live track. After the Devils' Gospel was completed, Evert and Koos started recording songs with Kwelagobe "PO BOX" Sekele called Battle Cock.

Evert took a bit of a break form BPJ and started drumming for a band called The Deaf Commission. Later that year Evert and Koos started recording new material, which would become the "In The Name Of..."album. By mid 2011 Evert Snyman and Paul Vermaak (Bassist and co-founding member) started clashing because of creative differences. The album was performed by mostly Evert(doing the majority of the bass and drums) and Koos(doing more vocals than before, as well as bass and banjo). Marisa Snyman also co wrote many of the songs with the band, and also did vocals on the opening track on the album"Everything's okay". Evert then met James Botes. He asked him to come lay down a bass track on their new album. After the recording he asked him to come for a jam with BPJ. When he showed up he knew the tracks which Evert had given him to learn better than the band itself. He then replaced Paul Vermaak as the bands' bassist.
The band started taking the newly recorded material to the stage.

In April of 2012 bianca nobanda was fired from the band. The band did a couple of shows with Stefan Lawrence and Conley Van Der Westhuizen(a frequent collaborator since BPJ's first album) on drums, however BPJ decided to take a break from rock music. Evert, Koos and James then took to the stage with Kwelagobe"PO BOX" Sekele as Battlecock (the side project that Evert Snyman, Koos Van Der Wat and Kwelagobe"PO BOX" Sekele did in 2010). Evert Snyman also started a new band with Louise Eksteen (Bride Reunion) called Gay Thing.

After a 6 month hiatus Black Pimp'n Jesus released their 5th album "Bluegrass IN Stereo"(available on soundcloud.com), an 8 track EP which was recorded shortly after "IN THE NAME OF..." featuring Gad De Combes on Accordion, Melodica and Glockenspeel. This album is more of an acoustic, folk album and is sung by both Evert Snyman and Koos Van Der Wat.
BPJ's newest addition is drummer Marizanne Scholtz.
The band are currently gigging actively and recording their 6th album BLACK PIMP'n JESUS FOREVER.
