The band formed in December 1968, led by frontman János Baksa-Soós. The classic line-up included Iván Bianki, Miklós Doleviczényi, Attila Imre and András Kisfaludy. Even though they often performed as the open act for Illés, enabling them to play a relatively large number of gigs, the audence usually did not understand their music. Their live shows were characterised by constant improvisation, both musically and regarding stage presence. They played unforgettable concerts, intertwined with performance art, at the Budai Ifjúsági Park (Buda Youth Park), in front of their own audiences. Their progressive style was shaped by improvisative musicianship and a heavily keyboard-laden sound. They set several poems by Attila József to music. Kex didn’t appeal to the “officially approved” music tastes, they only released one single (two songs: Elszállt egy hajó a szélben/Család), and the radio recorded four of their songs.
With the departure of Baksa-Soós in autumn 1971 (he defected to West Germany), the band practically ceased to exist, although the other members attempted, unsuccessfully, to stay together for another year and a half.
