Canal Street Blues Oliver King 1923
King Oliver moved from New Orleans to settle in Chicago.
In 1922 he convinced Louis Armstrong to do the same. Young Louis moved in with "Papa" Joe and the Creole Jazz Band was created.
In 1923 Oliver recorded some 35 tunes in 5 recording dates between April 6 and December 15.
In the first date the band recorded 9 tunes. One of these was Canal Street Blues.
The band: Joe Oliver cornet, Louis Armstrong cornet, Johnny Dodds clarinet, Honore Dutrey trombone, Lil Hardin piano, Bill Johnson banjo and Baby Dodds drums
This is one of the first recordings by a so called "race" band. Oliver's band was "the" group in town. They played nightly in Chicago's Lincoln Garden where a 1000 people could come to listen, dance and jeer.
Of course there is no film of any of that.
note:
Once in a while when I have a few spare hours I match a tune from my CD collection with pictures and slam the whole thing together. Lots of fun and I think it adds that extra dimension which one doesn't get with audio only. Thank you iMovie to make it even possible for nontechnical people like me.
