Ugly Child - Muggsy Spanier 1954
Ugly Child - Muggsy Spanier All Star Session 1954.
This has been one of my favourite records of Muggsy Spanier. A recording session during a performance in a Chicago nightclub in 1954.
Muggsy had surrounded himself with some of the very best musicians in the style. I mention Earl Fatha Hines on piano, Jimmy Archey trombone, Darnell Howard clarinet, Pops Foster bass and Earl Watkins drums.
‘Ugly Child’ is the same chord sequence as the tune ‘Pretty Doll’, a top hit from the twenties written by Clarence Williams.. Here the tune is played without the public refrain. The musicians getting into some real jazz without the intruding lyrics.
