Blues Valentine Kid Thomas 1978

In this clip we see a tune played by the Louisiana Joy Makers from Toronto in 1978 as part of the Peter Appleyard jazz shows. New Orleans trumpet player Kid Thomas Valentine was brought to Toronto from New Orleans to be featured with this band.
(note: what makes this clip special for me is the fact that Bruce Bakewell plays clarinet in the band. Bruce was a member of our Climax Jazz Band between 1971 and 1976 and his intense and very personable way of playing has always impressed me very much. A wonderful collegue and dear friend , he resigned from the band because of problems between him and our bass player.
That's how these things happen, just too bad)

Thomas Valentine, commonly known as Kid Thomas ( 1896 - 1987) was a jazz trumpeter and bandleader.
Kid Thomas was born in Reserve, Louisiana and came to New Orleans in his youth. He gained a reputation as a hot trumpet man in the early 1920s. Starting in 1926 he led his own band, for decades based in the New Orleans suburb of Algiers, Louisiana. Kid Thomas Valentine started attracting a wider following with his first recordings in the 1950s. His band played regularly at Preservation Hall from the 1960s through the 1980s. Thomas also toured extensively for the Hall, including a Russian tour, and was often a guest at European clubs and festivals, working with various local bands as well as his own.
Kid Thomas Valentine died in New Orleans.
