At least 40 people have been killed – many of them burned alive – when a bus crashed into a stationary oil tanker in southern India.

The incident happened on the main Bangalore to Hyderabad highway.

The driver and one other passenger are believed to have jumped to safety after breaking a window.

More than 110,000 people are killed every year in road accidents across India.

Most crashes are blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and aging vehicles.
