Making a call on your mobile 30,000 feet up in America could soon be allowed under a proposal from the US Federal Communications Commission.

Passengers can already use their mobiles in a number of other countries. Now America is set to follow suit although airlines will have to equip their planes with special antennas approved by the US Federal Aviation Administration before anyone can press the call button. Talking will only be allowed when flying above 10,000 feet.

A similar proposal was considered in 2004 but abandoned three years later.
