IRAQ BLOCKS INTERNET TO DISRUPT INSURGENTS
Iraq has blocked Internet access in five provinces and is denying access to Google, social media websites including Twitter and Facebook and also communication apps in the rest of the country to disrupt the tools used by Islamic terrorists as they sweep through the country. The government measures were laid out in a letter to Internet service providers and translated by the site Social media Exchange. The document includes a warning from the authorities, saying anyone who does not obey these orders will be endangering national security.
The official aim is to prevent Islamic militants from using the web. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which embarked on a mass offensive in the north of the country over a week ago, is indeed highly active on social networks. The Jihadist movement uses Twitter and YouTube to share and circulate propaganda messages, videos and photos of its victories and also the fate that awaits anyone who resists.
Iraqi web users meanwhile have been posting messages to the “Iraqi Network for Social Media” Facebook page for example, with news on banned networks and channels and also advice or tips on how to bypass the censorship. Some have shared instructions on how to use the Tor or Psiphon software, systems that enable users to circumvent the government`s Internet censorship.
