Fear on the frontline: the impact on people of conflict in eastern Ukraine

After months of intense conflict parts of Donetsk resemble a ghost town. Under heavy bombing, shelling and shooting many have died and many more have fled this once-thriving hub of Ukrainian industry. Factory gates are shut, businesses run down and shops closed, and all despite a ceasefire brokered in Minsk in on September 5. In this edition of Reporter or Kyiv bureau chief Sergio Cantone travels the conflict zones of east Ukraine to gauge the impact of violence on the local population.

During his travels through Donetsk, Mariupol and other frontline areas he meets a beleaguered, war-weary people on both sides of the pro-Ukrainian and pro-Russian divide. From unpaid miners to fearful mothers they all have tales of hardship, deprivation and anxiety for the future. One theme that unites them is a yearning for a return to peace and stability in their region.
