Drones May Patrol India's Capital Following Rape Incidents

In hopes of making New Delhi safer for women at night, drones equipped with night vision may be used to watch the streets.

New Delhi, the capital of India, will soon have police use mini drones equipped with night vision to patrol the city.

This announcement comes after a 27-year-old female financial executive was allegedly raped by an Uber driver.

The attack prompted the city to reevaluate the safety of its streets, particularly in the more crime-prone neighborhoods.

Potentially beginning as early as next month, the drones will each fly approximately 600 feet above the ground covering a hexagonal grid of a few miles.

The north district area, will be the first to get drones. This is the neighborhood where the Uber incident took place.

Eventually, the drone program could expand to other parts of New Delhi, as long as the police can obtain the equipment needed.

The video surveillance will be monitored by Quick Response Teams, allowing for immediate action if something unsavory is captured by the drones.

Privacy issues may become a concern, as well as the potential downside of having multiple devices flying around.
