ARGENTINA: WEB USERS REACT TO DEATH OF ALBERTO NISMAN
Late on Sunday or in the early hours of Monday, just several hours before he was due to speak to a special committee of congress, federal prosecutor Alberto Nisman was found dead in his Buenos Aires apartment. In charge of an investigation into the 1994 suicide bombing of a Jewish center, he had levelled accusations that top Argentine officials, including the president Cristina Kirchner, had conspired with Iran to cover up its responsibility for the bombing.
His death has sparked lively commentary online, thousands of web users across Argentina have been posting under the #MuerteDeNisman hashtag, sharing their sadness over the prosecutor`s death and paying tribute to a man they say had great integrity. A lot of social networkers have been questioning the circumstances of his death; a government official has said all signs point to suicide, but the people behind these Twitter posts beg to differ and suggest the lawyer was murdered before he could expose any government secrets.
And while many have taken to the web to share their sorrow and indeed their anger, others have taken to the streets. As we can see from these photos that have been doing the rounds on social media, thousands of demonstrators gathered in cities across Argentina on Monday night, to publicly pay their respects to Alberto Nisman and to also demand an immediate and independent investigation to establish the circumstances of his death.
