Stupidity virus: ATCV-1 virus infection appears to compromise intelligence

Researchers from Johns Hopkins University and the University of Nebraska have identified a virus that appears to affect human cognition, the study group published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal on Tuesday.

A great number of microorganisms inhabit the human body, but recent studies have found that a virus that lives in the throat is linked to decreased performance in cognitive assessments.

The research group took throat swabs from 92 people, and 40 people who were found positive with the ATCV-1 virus showed an approximately 10 percent decrease in performance compared to the average in cognitive tests. They also found similar results when they introduced the virus to mice, which showed compromised cognitive ability compared to normal, uninfected mice.

The ATCV-1 virus originated from algae and was not previously known to infect mammals.

Research Lead Robert Yolken remains skeptical that virus can affect intelligence, but is open to the idea that virus can affect the way genes are being expressed in the brain.
