Rahul Gandhi's Wayanad Landslide Account Sparks Outrage | Over 200 Dead, Several Missing

In Lok Sabha, LoP Rahul Gandhi says "I visited Wayanad with my sister some days back and I saw with my own eyes, the pain and suffering that resulted from this tragedy. More than 200 people are dead and a huge number of people are missing. I would like to commend the work of the Union and State Govt, NDRF, SDRF, Army, Navy, Cost Guard, Fire Department and others and assistance from the neighbouring states including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. This is a huge tragedy. I would urge the Union Govt to support a comprehensive rehabilitation package for Wayanad including building disaster-resilient infrastructure and helping the communities. I would also like to urge the Govt to declare the Wayanad landslide as a national disaster..."

00:00Speaker sir, thank you for permitting me to raise this issue of the
00:29tragedy in Wayanad. I visited Wayanad with my sister some days back and I saw with my
00:40own eyes the devastation, the pain and suffering that resulted from this tragedy. Almost two
00:52kilometres of the hill had just collapsed and almost a river of stones, river of mud had come
01:01down and more than 400 people, more than 200 are dead and vast number are missing but the eventual
01:19casualty is going to be 400 plus is what it seems. I'd like to commend the work of the Union and State
01:30Government, of NDRF and SDRF, of the Army, Navy and Coast Guard, District Administration, Forest
01:40Department, Fire and Rescue, Health Personnel and assistance also from the states Karnataka and
01:47Tamil Nadu, Telangana. It was also nice to see that all communities came together, everybody
02:02came together to help the people, people from different ideologies, different communities,
02:09everybody came together and helped. Landslide has cut vital roads and has made it nearly
02:20impossible for rescue teams to reach the far reaches. This is, I think, a huge tragedy sir
02:27and it's a very concentrated tragedy located in one very specific area. So I would urge the Union
02:36Government to support a comprehensive rehabilitation package for Wayanad including for
02:43building disaster resilient infrastructure and to help the affected communities. I would also like
02:49to urge the Union Government to enhance the compensation that people are getting and finally
02:57I would also like to urge the government to declare the Wayanad landslides as a national disaster.
03:03I saw it with my own eyes and I've seen many disasters. I visited many different
03:13places where disasters have taken place but it was very, very sad to see here that in a number
03:22of cases only one member of a family is remaining. Mother, father, grandmother, brother, everybody is
03:30dead and there's only one person remaining. Sometimes the person is a child, sometimes the
03:36person is an adult. So it was a real tragedy to see that and I'd like to also thank the entire
03:42house for the support that everybody has given to the people of Wayanad. Thank you.
