PRESENTED BY PRAGYA TIWARI
Bhanwari Devi is one of the finest, most powerful and recognisable voices to emerge from the folk tradition of India. A mother of nine children, Bhanwari grew up steeped in the Phad recitation tradition - a spiritual, ballad-based story-telling form, which she learnt from her uncles as a child, and practised from when she was 14.
Married at an early age, she performed with her husband in village community events but his untimely demise in 2004 interrupted her journey until her son Kishan took up the harmonica and started accompanying her during Phad narrations. Always singing veiled, Bhanwari's voice became widely known in the region, and she was invited to perform at JodhpurRIFF in 2009, where she took stage with the acclaimed Sufi singer Rekha Bhardwaj, and collaborated with Sona Mahapatra on an impromptu set, laying the foundation for a long-term collaboration with Sona and her producer Ram Sampath, that bore fruit in 2 Coke Studio special episodes in 2014 and 2015.
JodhpurRIFF also fostered her collaboration with the Gipsy Allstars, 'Return to Rajasthan', which was showcased on BalconyTV in 2014. Bhanwari also has the unique distinction of being the only female folk singer to have performed on invitation at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2011.
Bhanwari Devi hails from Balara Village, Lakshmangarh (Sikar district in Shekawati). Her repertoire is unusually wide -- including devotional bhajans, recitation of Epics, folk songs and Rajasthani Classical forms -- Maand and Mumal.
From devotional singer to international fusion collaborator to ambassador of folk art, the 54 year old Bhanwari is already a legend. BalconyTV is proud to feature her in a rare performance of Bhiksha Ghaalo, a traditional devotional composition.
