PRESENTED BY GOVIND SINGH BHATI

In this exclusive episode presented in association with the Jodhpur RIFF, the music festival renowned for its tradition of bringing the most relevant folk and roots artists from around the world to India, we feature Christine Salem from the Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean. Described as a “potent,‑ indefatigable contralto” (The New York Times), Salem is one of the foremost exponents of maloya, a nearly‑extinct musical tradition rooted in the work songs and chants of slavery, and now a vehicle for the soulful delivery of politically aware lyrics in Creole, Malagasy, Comorian and Swahili.

Salem believes that maloya must have a wider audience, and has travelled extensively, researching the roots of the form, and experimenting in modernising it. A lot of her songs are inspired from the hypnotic, percussion‑driven music and rhythms used during ceremonies and rituals dedicated to one's ancestors, though she quips, "... I don't use quite the same music on stage, in respect for the ancestors, and because if we did that, my audience might go into a trance!" (The Guardian, 18/07/2013)

Part 1 of 4 of a special partnership between Oijo and Jodhpur RIFF, featuring a curated pick of the festivals' artists for BalconyTV Delhi.
