PRESENTED BY MATT CALDER
At only 18 years old, Alex Kumar’s unique, self-taught style, and his obvious affinity with the roots music of the Americas, has seen him play on shores both sides of the Atlantic, with seasoned British folk musicians, American bluesmen, Cuban virtuosos, and by himself as a solo artist.
Influenced by such legendary figures of the 20th century as Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Blind Willie Johnson, Johnny Cash, Robert Johnson, Townes Van Zandt, and José Feliciano, as well as his own family history and Transatlantic origins, Alex Kumar is quickly building a cult following, which has seen him called ‘the next great alternative singer-songwriter’.
“I set out - a romantic fool - to capture humanity at its best and basest, in hope that, with the testimony of enough tales of kindness and depravity, we might unearth some greater beauty, and find a reason to bridge the gulf between one another and share the human experience together.
“Out of the folk tradition, the blues method, the legacies of slavery and struggle stained across my skin, the tales of trials and redemption shared through generations, the poetry of a hundred or more forgotten sons of the Americas, the nomadic destiny etched into the dust on my own worn-down boot-heels, and the distant dream-memory of when - not so long ago - beauty’s touch ignited my blood, I have made my songs.
“Needless to say, most things haven’t worked out.”
