Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa
Bapu ji is an 82 year old man who has been on hunger strike for over 245 days now. He is protesting the mistreatment of political prisoners detained by the Government of India and the State Government of Punjab.
These are prisoners who have already served significant time in custody and are eligible for release under government discretion.
However, the government disproportionately withholds this discretionary release from political prisoners and in particular Sikh prisoners.
Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa’s peaceful struggle raises awareness of the plight of political prisoners not only in India but also around the world.
Bapu Surat Singh and his son Ravinderjit Singh have been arrested for this peaceful protest. In fact Bapu ji has been hospitalized and forcefully fed through a feeding tube. Despite this Bapu ji remains committed to his struggle.
I had the honour of standing in parliament to raise awareness of his struggle and the struggles of political prisoners detained around the world.
