This orchestra was one of the jazz pioneers in Spain. Hardly known abroad, 'Demon' was very active and popular in the Barcelona from around 1920 through 1920. His songs and stage works were performed throughout the country. From six in the evening till four o'clock in the morning, the Orquesta Demon's Jazz enlivened with "select dance programs" the Cabaret Catalán's live performances. Its leader was pianist Lorenzo Torres Nin (1890-1964), also known as 'Maestro J. Demon, a pioneer in writing the first eminently jazz arrangements, which earned him the nickname "Rey del Jazz-Band" at first and then, when he developed his style as the "Spanish Whiteman", besides being one of the first musicians in the country to achieve international recognition. When debuted the famous Josephine Baker in the Prinicipal Palace in March 1930 (a sensation in Barcelona at the time), she was accompanied by this band. El café de la marina, directed by Domènec Pruna. This great recording, however, is one of his early ones, made in 1922.
