NEW YORK — A New York church received what some would call a gift from the gods on Monday when a newborn child was found abandoned in the church's nativity scene.
Church custodian Jose Moran was sweeping the floor of the appropriately named Holy Child Jesus Church in Queens shortly after returning from lunch when he heard a baby crying.
He didn't think much of it at first, but after noticing no one else was inside he approached the source of the noise.
Inside the manger of the church's unfinished nativity scene he found an hours-old baby boy — still with his umbilical cord attached — swaddled in a pile of purple towels.
Moran quickly called Father Christopher Heanue and the baby was later taken to a nearby hospital where it was given a clean bill of health — and the nickname Jesus.
Police later found CCTV footage of a woman believed to be the mother buying towels at a nearby convenience store.
They also found footage showing the woman entering the church with her bundle of joy before leaving a little while later empty handed.
Police are now busy trying to track down the child's mother. At least one parishioner has offered to adopt him.
