LOS ANGELES — A newborn child was found abandoned and buried alive near the Compton Riverbed in Los Angeles last Friday afternoon.

KABC reports that two elderly sisters were walking along a bike path close to the Compton Riverbed when they heard crying and called the police. Sheriff's deputies who soon arrived discovered the baby in a crevice under asphalt and debris, reported CNN.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) say that after rescuing the baby, a one-day old girl, from the crevice, she was wrapped in a blanket. Police say the child was 'cold to the touch'.

According to CNN, responding paramedics treated her at the scene. She is currently in stable condition at a local hospital, reported KABC.

Authorities say that if found, whoever abandoned the baby will face attempted murder and child endangerment charges, reported CNN.

"We do know that if the child had spent the night there in those conditions the baby wouldn't have survived," LASD Sergeant Marvin Jaramilla told CNN.
