SEATTLE — Amazon halted the sales of hoverboards over the weekend as safety fears mounted over a spate of fires caused by the self-balancing scooters. Some 97 percent of the hoverboards for sale on Amazon have been removed from sale since Friday, CNN Money reported one manufacturer as saying.
Amazon is asking sellers to prove their hoverboards are safety compliant, according to hoverboard makers Swagway.
The news comes after several major airlines last week banned hoverboards from flights and as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission opened a probe into reports of 11 fires attributed to the devices in 10 states.
Amazon wants proof from sellers that hoverboards "are compliant with applicable safety standards, including UN 38.3 (battery), UL 1642 (battery), and UL 60950-1 (charger)," Swagway told CNN Money.
"We applaud Amazon for taking these steps to weed out the low quality boards and want to note that this removal is NOT specific to Swagway," a spokeswoman for the company told CNN Money, adding that its products met the specifications and the information had been sent to Amazon.
