MANDERA, KENYA — A heroic group of Muslims stood up for their Christian companions during an Islamist attack — preventing a repeat of a massacre that saw 28 non-Muslims killed in the same area last year.

A bus travelling without a police escort from Nairobi to the town of Mandera near the Somali border was shot at by Al-Shabaab militants around 7 a.m. on Monday, forcing the vehicle to stop, Reuters reported.

Muslim passengers were quick to help disguise the Christians on board before the militants boarded the bus and ordered everyone off.

Despite being ordered by the terrorists to separate into groups of Muslims and non-Muslims, the group refused and stuck together. When the gunmen threatened to shoot them, the Muslim passengers told the militants to "kill them together or leave them alone", according to the BBC.

The gunmen eventually gave up and fled. In addition to two deaths, at least four others were wounded in the ambush.

Al-Shabaab previously said it would not stop attacks until Kenya withdraws troops fighting militants in Somalia, according to Reuters.
