In Ustrasana, the thoracic structures are being maintained in an "inhaled"position, and the abdominal wall is being stretched. This adds up to a decreased ability of the body to breathe "normally." The trick is to find support from the deeper musculature so the more superficial efforts can quiet down. Then it's possible to notice an interesting relationship between the deep anterior neck muscles (scalenes) and the breath movement in the apex of the lungs, which are suspended from the inner scalene muscles.
Body shapes can be deceptive. The exact same external contours can be created by different factors. These drawings detail the distribution of fat in the abdominal region.
Left -- the adipose is concentrated in the superficial fascia above the abdominal musculature. The stretch in the abdominal wall tends to be less intense in this case.
Right -- the adipose is within the abdominal cavity, and pushing forward on the abdominal muscles, which have to stretch further in the pose, and will be more likely to inhibit the breathing.
