After having a fight with her husband, Vera Kessler escapes into the arms of gigolo Arnold Hartmann. Although Vera eventually returns to her senses and goes back home, it's not before writing Arnold a sheaf of letters that could ruin her marriage and destroy her high-society standing. Arnold uses the missives to blackmail Vera, and, when the day comes to pay off her extortionist, she unwittingly steps into an even bigger scandal -- murder.
