LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, INDIANA — A beloved elementary school principal in the Indianapolis-area was killed in a bus crash on Tuesday afternoon saving several children from a similar fate.

The principal of Amy Beverland Elementary School, Susan Jordan was helping students board the school buses to go home when a school bus carrying 25 students suddenly accelerated and jumped the curb.

The female bus driver told the firefighters that she does not know why the bus suddenly jumped the curb but she saw Jordan pushed several kids out of the way before being hit by the bus.

Jordan died at the scene. Two 10-year-old students suffered serious injuries. None of the students on the school bus was injured.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's Fatal Alcohol and Crash Team is investigating the incident.
