Police are hunting a gunman in south-west Victoria after a father-of-two was shot dead at close range last night.

Homicide detectives are searching for the suspect after he shot Paul Cochrane, 36, dead on Anakie Road, Geelong, just after 11pm.

It is believed the pair were involved in an argument before Mr Cochrane suffered a single gunshot wound to the stomach.

He died from heavy blood loss.

The gunman shot from close range, in a dark coloured sedan, before fleeing the scene.

Police said it is unclear at this stage whether the gunman was known to Mr Cochrane.
