XISHUANGBANNA, CHINA — A wild elephant went on a rampage in a southern Chinese nature reserve last week and damaged more than a dozen cars.

The 3-tonne beast was reportedly courting a female love interest when she scorned him in favor of another elephant.

Local officials thought the male elephant would turn playful upon seeing parked cars and added that some tourists found the 20-minute ordeal "exciting" and "thrilling".

"The tourists were quite excited to see a real wild elephant, and they were using their cellphones to take photos and videos," local Chinese officials wrote on a social media account, the Associated Press reported.

"Even the owners of some damaged cars found the experience to be thrilling and very interesting, although their cars got scraped."

The elephant later returned to the reserve and the owners of the battered vehicles will be compensated for damage incurred, officials said.
