BUFFALO, NEW YORK — A Buffalo police officer whose comedy skits have been viewed more than 6 million times online was suspended without pay yesterday.

Richard Hy, an officer with the force's housing unit, has posted more than 130 clips to video blogging site Vine since 2014. His Angry Cops page has more than 22,000 followers, who tune in to see a human side to the police force.

But Officer Hy's bosses don't seem to get the joke.

Buffalo Police allow officers to be on social media, but they can't appear in uniform or represent themselves as cops, according to WIVB.

It seems Hy has fallen foul of these rules, because his badge can be seen clearly in some videos.

Dishonouring the position of officer on social media is also a big no-no for the Buffalo Police Department. So Hy's jokes about calling in sick, stealing cocaine from the evidence room, or shooting a suspect to get vacation time, may have crossed the line.

Hy has also been warned before about his videos, WIVB reported, citing police sources.

But with cops under constant fire these days for having a poor relationship with the public, isn't showing a human side to be applauded?

We think Officer Hy's videos break down barriers between cops and the people they're paid to serve. And for that, he should be reinstated.
