Need a quick boost of energy for the morning? Here's a nice 5-minute Vinyasa Yoga sequence to do after your warm ups.

Why is Vinyasa Yoga Popular?

Everyday, thousands of Vinyasa yoga classes are taught all over the world. Vinyasa is the most popular form of yoga in the U.S. So what is it that makes this form of yoga so pervasive? Here are a few reasons:

1) It is a good workout.

Many people come to yoga primarily for the exercise element of the practice, and Vinyasa provides a solid workout. Vinyasa is really more of a style of teaching than a distinct practice of yoga, as it incorporates many other styles. Usually, the teacher sets a pace with poses of Ashtanga, punctuated by half sun salutations. Vinyasa flow focuses on moving from one asana to the next in a calm rhythm. The ‘flow’ keeps bodies moving, and the poses incorporated are, essentially, body-weight exercises. The body heats up, the muscles are stretched, and everyone works up a sweat.

2) It makes you feel good.

The repetitive and rhythmic movements of Vinyasa can create a strong positive energy, leaving students feeling calm and centered. Vinyasa is flexible enough that many positive practices from other forms of yoga can be incorporated, such as various breathing techniques and meditation. The constant movements of Vinyasa help the mind stay present perfect for those who struggle to stop their mind from wandering.

3) It is flexible.

As mentioned before, Vinyasa borrows much from Ashtanga. But unlike Ashtanga, or many other practices such as Bikram, the sequence used in Vinyasa classes can be modified each and every time. This makes it interesting and challenging. It works new muscles and keeps students from falling into a rut. In this era of short attention spans, variety is popular!

4) It’s great for beginners.

For many people, Vinyasa is their first introduction to yoga, and it is a great starting point. Although many of the asanas can be quite challenging, Vinyasa sequence and tempo can be tailored to meet the level of the class. The instructor is there to guide students through each pose, it is a great way to build a foundation and learn the basics.
