Officials in Alberta, Canada say they are working to revise hunting laws that allow the use of spears, reports CBC News.
The announcement comes after a kill video posted in June by an American hunter incited outrage over the method.
Josh Bowmar of Ohio filmed himself launching a spear at and impaling a baited bear, notes CTV News.
According to The Guardian, after the animal is struck, Bowmar gleefully exclaims, “He’s going down. I drilled him perfect…I smoked him.”
Responses to the footage, which was for a time publicly viewable on YouTube, largely lacked that particular sort of enthusiasm.
Among the many critics is the Humane Society’s Chief Executive, Wayne Pacelle, who noted that Bowmar behaved, “…as if he had really gotten somewhere in life and achieved something no one had done before. He’s probably right – very few people have ever engaged in depravity and evil quite like he did.”
Bowmar maintains that he killed the bear in the most humane way possible.
