COLLEGE PARK, MARYLAND — A bus driver is being called a hero after she successfully evacuated 20 children from a burning bus on Monday.

Renita Smith was driving the children from Glenarden Woods Elementary School, near 9600 block of 51st Avenue in College Park, Maryland, when the bus caught fire. Authorities suspect the blaze originated near one of the rear wheels.

Witness Fazlul Kabir posted about the incident on his Facebook page. He wrote that he saw Smith helping the children, one-by-one, off the burning bus and that she took extra time just to double check for others.

“I am a mom of two kids. It’s my job to save them,” Smith told Kabir.

The bus was destroyed, but all the children arrived home safely.
