I want to be Happy – Dick Hyman All Stars 1988
During a jazz festival in France we see pianist Dick Hyman and his all Stars effectively jam through the jazz standard “I want to be Happy”.
This tune lasted just over 10 minutes and my iTunes limit is ten minutes so I chopped off just half of the first ensemble chorus.
The individual solo work by these jazz masters is what counts most. The initial solo is by trombonist Earl Grey, followed by a trumpet solo by Doc Cheatham. This is followed by just an unbelievable creative and original clarinet solo by Kenny Davern.
He is so inspired and this shows on the faces of both Doc and Earl.
Leader Dick Hyman is always right on top with his beautiful piano playing followed by the bass of Major Holly who with his humming follows in the footsteps of bassist Slam Stewart.
It all ends with two outchorusses followed by a drumtag by Oliver Jackson.
