JAKARTA — A kid’s storybook has caused outrage, amusement and confusion in equal measure in Indonesia, after people noticed it appears to tell the story of a tiny tot pleasuring himself.
An Instagrammer snapped photos of the book suggestively titled, “I dare to sleep alone”. The pages clearly show-and-tell the young protagonist rubbing himself against a pillow between his legs.
As story went viral, angry parents began putting in calls to the publisher, who panicked as it had pulled the book from stores nationwide in December, but can’t do anything about copies being sold online.
It’s author, Fita Chakra is a well-known writer, having published numerous romance novels and children's books. Seems the line between the two is beginning to blur.
In a bizarre and inexplicable attempt at damage control, the publisher of I Dare to Sleep Alone claims the book is, in fact, a sex education title.
However, Indonesia’s Child Protection Commission had ordered all copies be pulled so as not to harm youngsters who may see it.
While some commenters have slammed the book as trash, others say the two offending pages are taken out of context and the book could teach kids valuable lessons about sexuality.
The publisher has offered full cash-back refunds to anyone who turns in their copy, and on February 21 posted a full apology to it’s official Instagram account.
No word yet on Ms. Chakra, who appears to have gone into hiding.
