French President Emmanuel Macron said in a response to US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord that climate change is “one of the major issues of our time,” affecting all people and future generations.“If we do nothing our children will know a world of migration, of wars, of shortage,” Macron said on June 1 in a statement streamed live. He invited those disappointed by the US decision to come to France to work with him and closed with a direct swipe at Trump: “Make our planet great again.”In his announcement, Trump said the treaty was not actually about climate change but a “a redistribution of US wealth to other countries,” giving them an “economic advantage over the US.” Trump added that he “will begin negotiations to reenter either the Paris Accord or, really, an entirely new transaction.” Trump said the United States will be “the cleanest” country in the world without sacrificing American jobs.
