No matter who wins the US election, the United States on November 4 became the only country to leave the Paris Agreement. However, whether this exit will be long-term or just a matter of months will depend on who is elected the 46th president of the United States. Democratic candidate Joe Biden has committed to the US re-joining the Paris Agreement. The US, under the Obama administration, acceded to the Paris Agreement on September 3, 2016, with entry into force occurring two months later. The formal exit from the 2015 climate agreement was an election promise by President Donald Trump during his 2015 campaign. In June 2017, President Trump announced that the United States would be pulling out of the Paris Agreement. The United Nations and some of its member states have expressed regret over the US' departure from the Paris climate accord and said they remain committed to working with all American stakeholders and partners around the world to accelerate climate action.
