The European Commission warned on Wednesday (July 26) it stood ready to ‘immediately’ trigger the procedure that could suspend Poland’s voting rights in the bloc if Warsaw forced Supreme Court judges into retirement.
Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans said that if the Polish government went ahead with its controversial judicial reform plan, Brussels would “immediately” trigger the procedure, known as Article 7.
The Commission’s concerns regarding the judicial reform are unjustified, Konrad Szymanski, Poland’s deputy foreign minister in charge of European affairs told the PAP news agency.
