Kiss me Sweet – Pug Horton 1987
This was recorded during the 1987 Ascona Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Already years before Pug was a fine singer with a love for the early jazz classics. She performed for a full week with our Climax Jazz Band in Toronto in 1977 and we all became good friends. Around that time she decided to live with the famous reedplayer Bob Wilber and it was good to talk with her again a few days ago. She and Bob still travel the world to perform. She asked me if there were any recordings she had done with our band. Unfortunately, she had not, but I found a film clip of her being featured with Bob’s band. I had never heard this unique little tune called “Kiss me Sweet” It was first recorded in 1923 by Piron’s New Orleans Orchestra and then again in 1924 by singer Susie Edwards with accompaniment by King Oliver and Clarence Williams, probably the source of Pug’s performance. In the band: Bob Wilber on clarinet, Clive Wilson trumpet and Ray Smith piano, I did not recognize the bassist and drummer. Pug certainly does an intense and wonderful version of this jazz classic.
