Afric McGlinchey was born in Ireland, raised in Zambia and Zimbabwe and gained degrees from Rhodes University and the University of Cape Town in South Africa. She returned to Ireland in 1999. After winning a Hennessy Poetry Award, her début collection, The lucky star of hidden things was published by Salmon Poetry in 2012. She was also awarded the 2012 Northern Liberties Poetry Prize (Editors’ Choice), the 2015 Poets Meet Politics Prize, nominated for Pushcart and Forward prizes and placed, highly commended or listed in numerous competitions, including the Bridport, Magma and National Poetry Competitions (UK). Her collection was translated into Italian, and work has also been translated and published in Spanish, Irish, Romanian and Polish. Over 200 poems have been published in journals worldwide or broadcast on RTE and other radio stations. She has been invited to read at international festivals and events in Italy, South Africa, Northern Ireland, Paris, London and Zimbabwe, as well as all over Ireland. Named as one of Ireland’s rising poets in Poetry Ireland Review, she was awarded an Arts bursary to work towards her second collection, Ghost of the Fisher Cat, which was nominated for the 2016 Forward Prize. Afric lives in West Cork, Ireland, where she works as a freelance book editor and reviewer, facilitator and mentor.
