Celebrating Harehills 2008

'Celebrating Harehills 2008' celebrated the repainting of the Bankside Street Mural. The new painting celebrates Mandela's life and the twin ideas of 'Freedom and Unity'. A free Street Party was held with music from Dan Audio, Mik Artistik's Ego Trip, Hassan Erraji (who you can hear playing 'Nikriz' on the soundtrack to this slide show)(contact Hassan on 'fann2000@btinternet.com'). The oldest part of the mural was painted on 11th February 1991 (the day of Mandela's release from prison) by Anni Winter and Andrew Tear. The new Mural is a tribute to Nelson Mandela who was 90 years of age on 18th July 2008 and was mostly painted by Peanut, Anni,Aaron,Sparxx (hyro@hotmail.co.uk)and Ray with a host of local volunteers. On the day - the sun shone, 500 people came and danced in the streets and the Lord Mayor of Leeds danced with a fairy! Thank you to everyone who helped or came to dance! Come visit the Mural at LS8 5AP - and watch it grow and develop as we continue to add to it.
