Hawai‘i has a tendency to grow on you. In fact, with a little luck — and possibly a lot of hiking — you can watch this amazing place grow right in front of your eyes. The Hawai‘ian Islands are already much larger than they look, since they're actually huge mountains mostly hidden by seawater. Hawai‘i has the three tallest mountains on Earth, measured from base to summit, all built by oozing lava. The chain has eight major islands (plus many islets, atolls and seamounts), yet only three of its volcanoes have been active in the last 200 years.
