ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday came down hard on the Punjab government for extending the tenure of Chairman Sheikh Zayed Hospital and restrained it from giving him an extension.

A provincial law officer informed Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, who headed a three-judge bench of the apex court, that the tenure of Chairman Farid Khan is expiring this month.

The chief justice asked if his tenure was being extended on the directives of MNA Humza Shehbaz, son of Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The law officer said the hospital’s board of governors has decided to extend Khan’s tenure.

Justice Nisar reiterated that he won’t allow anyone to destroy institutions. He said he was well aware of the hospital’s condition and asked if the government couldn’t find any other person capable enough to run its affairs.

He directed the authorities to appoint a senior staff member of the hospital as its head.
