This textbook provides a survey of selective organic transformations. Volume 1 focuses on carbon-heteroatom bond-forming reactions, including units on acylation, heteroatom substitutions, oxidations, reductions, and alkene additions. The sophisticated chemist must often apply transformations that will chemoselectively react on only one functional group in a highly functionalized substrate, or with only one regioselective outcome, or favoring one stereoisomer over all others, essentially finding the right reaction partner. Examples include selective transformations that have been widely adopted, especially procedures utilized on large scale in the fine chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Some classical processes are included, as well as transformations developed more recently. The text also includes a sampling of new transformations that may not yet have been thoroughly evaluated for generality or utility, but these topics provide a sense of some of the exciting and emerging areas in methodology development. The textbook is designed for first-year chemistry graduate students with interests in organic chemistry, although it can also serve as a contemporary reference book for the practicing organic chemist. A small number of recommended problems are included at the end of each chapter.Note: embedded hyperlinks do not work on the Apple IPad, due to Apple Guidelines.
