00:18This is a snake farm in China, where 5,500 pounds
00:22 of female red-banded snakes are raised for food and medicine.
00:26The eggs have to be harvested every two hours by hand.
00:40The farm is located in Zisiqiao village, where snake farming
00:45has been a part of the local economy since the '70s.
00:49And this is the guy who started it all.
01:10Snake has long been a part of traditional Chinese medicine,
01:13and is believed to help with arthritis symptoms.
01:16However, there’s very little scientific evidence that supports such claims.
01:20In fact, in English, we even use the term "snake oil" to refer to fake cures.
01:27Still, it remains a very popular ingredient in Chinese cuisine,
01:31where it’s often dried, consumed in soups, or made into liquor.
01:35And at this village, which now hosts over 100 snake farms,
01:39it has proved to be quite a lucrative trade.
