Four of South Korea's political parties have joined hands to push for the expulsion of three main opposition Liberty Korea Party lawmakers for making defamatory remarks related to the 1980 pro-democracy movement.
The ruling Democratic Party and three minor opposition parties together, filed a complaint on Tuesday morning to the parliamentary ethics committee.
Kim Jin-tae, Lee Jong-myeong and Kim Soon-rye -- came under fire after holding a public hearing with a far-right figure,... who claims the movement was orchestrated by North Korean troops.
Some of the lawmakers also made disparaging comments,... calling the movement a riot,... and the protesters a monster group.
On May 18th 1980, the military launched a bloody crackdown on demonstrators in Gwangju protesting against then-President Chun Doo-hwan, who took power in a military coup -- killing around 200 people.
The parties said the lawmakers distorted history and insulted people who fought for democracy.
