Valley Electric Association’s board is denying allegations of a financial cover-up. The cooperative's board released a statement Monday accusing the Nye County Sheriff’s Office of acting unlawfully during a search of the cooperative’s offices Friday morning. The officers were looking to find evidence that former CEO Tom Husted had used the co-op's money for a sexual harassment cover-up, leading to rate hikes for members. According to the statement, Valley Electric employees were denied access to outside communication, including legal counsel. The board said they believe the way the search was conducted violated Nevada law. But Las Vegas attorney Aviva Gordon said the right to an attorney only comes into play after criminal proceedings.
