Anti-rape bill: Consensus among parties, bill to be tabled in LS
- 5 years ago
Consultations on anti-rape bill reach a consensus, govt agrees to drop the provision to decrease age of consensual sex from 18 to 16. Various opposition parties had strong reservations against the proposal. Opposition protest was both on legal and moral grounds. By law, minimum age of marriage is 18, so if age of consent is reduced it will sanction both sex among minors and pre-marital sex. The govt has only four working days to get the criminal laws amendment bill passed before Parliament goes into recess. If all goes well, anti-rape bill will be tabled in Lok Sabha tomorrow.
